Join Me in the Pound For Pound Challenge

I was watching the Biggest Loser Finale the other night . Anyone else? Were you as impressed and inspired as I was at what these fearless contestants were able to accomplish in just 7 short months?

I know that I still have another 80 lbs to lose (give or take) to reach a healthy happy weight. How about you? are you still carting around the remaining 5-10 lbs that you are finally ready to do something about or is your journey like mine?

Something else that lit a fire was the Biggest Loser’s Pound for Pound Challenge:

For every pound you pledge to lose through May 31, 2011, the Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 11¢ to Feeding America® — enough to secure one pound of groceries on behalf of local food banks. $1,040,000 maximum donation.

I think that was just the inspiration I needed to kick myself back into gear! Doing something to help myself while helping others. I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for a way to give back – either time, talent or treasure – but sometimes it’s easier said than done. NBC and the Biggest Loser have answered the question on my heart and I’ve responded.

I pledged. Have you? There are a number of groups you can join to take part in the challenge. Maybe there is one in your own back yard. If not, join my group – Slightly Off Kilter – and pledge to lose so that we can not only get healthier together, but can also help to fight hunger in our own back yard!

Who’s with me? Please share this with your friends and family so that together we can make a difference!

***edit- the link above to join my group takes you to the main teams page. Unfortunately, you have to search for the team you want to join. You can search by city, state or team name. In order to join a team, you must first pledge the amount of weight you will lose by May 31, 2011.  More info about the challenge can be found here in the FAQ page***

************Thanks Jessica – try scrolling through the pages instead of searching and the option to Join should be available! I found the group on page 10 – the more members we have, the closer to the top of the list we will be*****

What’s your Motivation?

tonight was truly life altering.  Ok, you may think I’m being overly dramatic, but let me explain.

Tonight was Mamavation TV night and seriously – if you don’t already know about Mamavation – you HAVE to check it out!  Tonight’s Guest Speaker was none other than Pete Cohen and man I know there were many, many others in the room but I so felt he was speaking to me!

He was talking with us about motivation and how there are 3 types of motivation and it hit home so here’s what I learned for those of you who weren’t there…

(1) Motivation to move away from something – This is a big one for me. I don’t want to be this weight… I don’t want to feel this tired… I don’t want to look like I do.  Anyone who has been or is on a journey like mine, has felt this.  It is usually what kick-starts me on another ‘diet’ and yet, as Pete pointed out this type of motivation can be short-lived… After all, who hasn’t seen a piece of chocolate cake and thought “hmmm… yeah, I don’t want to look like this, but i want that chocolate cake MORE!”

No?                                   just me?                                    really?                      hm… ok

(2) The second type of motivation is the motivation towards something – I want to fit into those jeans… I want to buy cute clothes off the rack… I want to feel beautiful in front of the camera… this is also good… and also short-lived… queue chocolate cake example from above 🙂  when both of these fail, or you meet your goal or whatever happens, then what?  Where’s the motivation to keep going?

then there’s a 3rd type of motivation…

(3) Motivation that comes from really liking what you are doing…wow.  it felt like a ton of bricks had been dropped on me.  Was Pete also a mind reader?  this week has been different but up till recently, if I exercised it was because I HAD to… but i dreaded every step.  I wouldn’t eat right because it was too hard and when i did take the time to make fresh meals, i resented the amount of time spent.  I had a sour outlook on life but something clicked inside of me last week and this one… I can do a lot more than I thought… I may not be very fast, but I can run!  I may not be very strong, but I have Mamaguns!  I may not always eat the right foods, but every time I do, it becomes closer to becoming a habit.

I’m going to keep celebrating the small victories because what else is going to keep me motivated long-term to live a healthy and wonderful life?!  I’m going to continue learning about new ways to challenge myself in the quest to become healthier!  I really think that pledging the Sistahood 4 weeks ago was the life changer, but tonight everything clicked into place.  The best part?  While I’m busy cheering myself on, I have an entire virtual cheering section cheering me on too!  and after all, you can’t disappoint your biggest fans, right?

**I hope this is readable…I was so pumped I wanted to get this up right away so I posted in a hurry with no time to revise – Bad form, i know***
